The three-track EP "Confession Tapes" is the first original output by Port Elizabeth's multi-talented artist Roscoe Nefdt, also known as FiveSidedDice. The studied musician provides us with three songs that are copletely different to each other in style, genre, mood, and tempo. Thus, it is highly recommendedto listen to the whole EP to get an overview of the versatile sounds on "Confession Tapes".
The EP begins with 'Wretched', a sensual and atmospheric Emopunk song. FiveSidedDice provides the audience with melodic mid-tempo Punk Rock riffs, soulful harmonies, and deeply emotional vocals. The song's calm coda is a beautifully fading-out sonic reverie.
The second track 'Save our own Lives' ties on to the mood and the tempo at first. But after the introduction is over, the song turns into an energetic Skate Punk anthem. Still very melodic, but with full force, FiveSidedDice creates a powerful and catchy Punk Rock song. The off-beat, sort-of Ska Punk part in the end adds further heat to this track. If you are familiar with the South African Punk Rock scene, you might spot some parallels to the sound of Toxik Sox here.
And finally, there is the third track, a remix of I found my Home'. While the original, which was featured on 2020 EP "Disposable, Pt. 1", was a soulful Indie Pop song, the remix goes LoFi Hip Hop. Therefore, FiveSidedDice got support on the vocals by Mike B, and Lookie Banzie.
"Confession Tapes" is a colourful bouquet of styles, and the short EP spreads a lot of passion, warth, and positivity. Despite its great variation in styles, the release is defined by an impressive cohesion. The three songs beautifully transgress into each other and thus create a wholesome sonic experience.
