Some weeks ago, we listened to Lewca's debut EP "3 Kids and a Mortgage". The sophomore release "Walking the Hedgehog" is, of course, much more recent, but it also is very different from the debut. But don't you worry, it still is a beautifully weird EP. The impact of Rap has mostly vanished, except for the song 'Fallen', and also the New Wave sound has mostly made way for an increase influence of Garage Rock and Rock'n'Roll, compared to "3 Kids and a Mortgage".
"Walking the Hedgehog" should be imagined to be a live recording - or at least, Lewca's intention was to record a set of tracks that would make a great gig. Hence, the setlist is structured by the rules of a sweat-inducing concert. The EP is opened by the dynamic youth anthem 'Young and Foolish', and directly leads into the offbeat banger 'Nuffink'. These two tracks also are driven by the powerful dynamics of two-tone Ska. With the third song 'Bad Man', Lewca goes crazy on Rock'n'Roll, and even a certain Psychobilly impact can be spotted in this heavily rolling dancefloor destroyer. The calm Rap song 'Fallen' lets the audience catch their breath before the final track 'Giggle' introduces the big finale.

Canned applause and brief stage announcements between the songs add to the concert atmosphere. They also emphasize the cynical approach, the artist has recorded a live gig in the studio with. Somewhere between frustration, satire, and the joy of playing music, Lewca points the middle finger at the pandemic. Seriously, I hope to watch a real Lewca show one day soon.
"Walking the Hedgehog" is a dynamic, versatile and exciting release. With or without the canned gig atmosphere, the EP is fun from beginning to end.
