Born A Ghost
— Shun The Believer / Neurotic
Release Date: April 20, 2021
A royal gift for fans of old
Neurosis and Cult of Luna from Sovereign and Leaving the Chapel Town era
respectively. The two song EP from the mysterious project from Tacoma,
Washington is a real treat for fans of the oppressive and eerie atmosphere
created by a guitar drone a la Sunn O))), samples and crushing heavy riffs of
Yob "Burning The Altar" style. Although there is only one such riff
here, believe me, it will be enough for you to make the corners of your lips
sink lower and lower to form a "reverse smile" of maximum riff
respect, and your head slowly nodding rhythmically to the beat of the music.
The vocals are simple but varied: samples, whispers and ... demonic growl. All
this creates a very cozy atmosphere of ominous godless rituals of dark cults,
calling out to the deepest corners of the underworld. And this call does not
remain unanswered I must say, because, as many know: when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you…
I, as a big fan of Neurosis, was
also pleased to hear references to the fathers of the genre not only in music,
but also in lyrics, and it should be said that this was done organically,
unobtrusively and super in the subject.
All in all, I highly recommend
this EP: Dark, ominous and atmospheric! It’s a bit of a pity that I’m not 13
years old to shit my pants in terror listening to this kind of music. The band
also has a second, earlier release available, but, of course, Shun The Believer
sounds much more holistic and solid!
